There are some verses in the Bible regarding the husband’s job description. There are clear items about what it is, and clear silence about what it’s not.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, Ephesians 5:25
Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Colossians 3:19
Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered. 1 Peter 3:7
The overwhelming emphasis is love your wife.
- not change your wife
- not improve your wife
- not criticize your wife
- not argue with your wife
- not raise your voice against your wife
- not expect more from your wife
- not even understand your wife
This is tough, coz I really want to do the other stuff. But that’s not the job description. Doing those things will result in pain and frustration on sides.
But this is also much simpler. If husbands can get over their selfishness, insecurity, immaturity, or expectations, then we have a very straightforward job ahead of us.
Just love her.
It’s easy to say. Very hard to do. Thankfully, Jesus loved us first. And He gives us a picture of what love looks like.
Now back to work.
So good…I mean … Yes yes yes
